Letters to SpaFlyer: Fat Farms / Weight Loss Retreats

I am looking for health and fitness spa that offers all spa amenities for a week 5 to 7 days, including facials, massages, good food, walks, relaxation exercise, etc. Sort of like a fat farm, although I'm not fat. I want the best available in US can you help me?
-- Cindy, Fairhope, Alaska

---Response by SpaFlyer:

It's difficult to recommend a retreat when we don't your preferred style (country, Asian, modern, cozy, medical), your budget (if any), how far you're willing to travel, or in what season, but as you've asked for "the best", we'd make the following recommendations:

LUXURY Resorts, considered among the best in the USA:
Golden Door, Escondido, California
Rancho La Puerta in Baja / Mexico / California
Miraval in Arizona
Canyon Ranch in Arizona

HEALTH-Spas:
Mountain Harbor Resort & Turtle Cove Spa in Mount Ida, Arkansas
Green Mountain at Fox Run, Vermont (massage available, but no esthetics), Excellent reputation for diabetes treatment and more. A Women only destination.
Birch Creek in New York (primarily diet and health related, with modest spa treatments)

BUDGET Spas:
The Oaks at Ojai in California (all inclusive program with both health, fitness, esthetics, and great walking and hiking trips, plus in a location which permits access to activities in town).

HOLISTIC / AYURVEDIC:
The Raj, Vedic City, Iowa

I am looking for a fitness/fat farm that has everything included along with some deep massage. I would like a moderately priced spa or retreat that has good results. I need to lose 35-40 pounds and want a good head start. I would like to stay up to 3 weeks. Warm would be nice as well. I like to hike, swim, do yoga and am healthy except for the weight. Think I need to get away from all animal and wheat.

I also need to lose 35 - 40 lbs. I am 4'11 1/2" and weigh 145 lbs. I am 70 years old. I have tried so many diets and exercise and nothing works, except that I continue to gain weight. I was 105 to 110 my adult life. When my husband died in 1994 I began gaining weight, and continue to do so. HELP -- Shirley W.

--Response by SpaFlyer:

Shirley, have you looked into Green Mountain at Fox Run? We'd recommend a visit to the beautiful hills of Vermont to help you get started again, as they have programs for every age and fitness level. Click the link in our original response, above, and see Green Mountain on our Weight Loss Retreats page. -- Editor

On a budget, is it possible to find a say...internship...w/a fat farm where I might swap clerical or other duties for four or more (4+) days of fitness? I am 5'6", weighing 170; wish to lose 20+ lbs, while my traveling buddy needs to lose even more! (I live in the Mid-Atlantic Area, prefer aesthetics traditional not contemporary, nor rustic)
- Signed, Hopeful

--Response by SpaFlyer:

Dear Hopeful: That would sur be nice, wouldn't it? We don't know of any offhand, but we'll publish your answer here, in the event in raises interest somewhere. Good luck. -- Editor

-- Response by SpaFlyer:

Judy, we'd recommend Rancho La Puerta in Mexico (www.rancholapuerta.com) which isn't moderately priced, I'm afraid; Pritikin Center in Florida (www.Pritikin.com); and The Raj (www.TheRaj.com). Good luck. -- Editor

I am a 63 year old diabetic woman who is legally blind and am looking for a live in weight loss camp in New York close to or near my home which is in Brooklyn. I would greatly appreciate your help asap. Thank you. Margie

Much of the stress that people become overwhelmed with is due to hectic lifestyles with no time to relax or rest in any way. When this stress builds up more and more without ever addressing it or taking the time to stop and calm your body down. This will eventually take it's toll on your body and cause it to come crashing down. Your body becomes tired and overwhelmed with exhaustion and believe me the last thing you need at this point is a "stress pill" as recommended in this article. My advice is to take a day off and relax at a nearby spa. Introducing some essential oils and hydrosols into your daily routine has proven to be beneficial as well. Stick to the all natural remedies along with herbs and vitamins to treat your body when overly stressed.
